Innovative Operator: Daniel Wos, CEO of Polyworld at Clontarf, came up with the idea of recycling old plastic water tanks into cheap, lightweight trolleys and containers for industries such as hospitals, and is now on his way to exporting them.

Clontarf-based business Polyworld has been making water tanks for more than 16 years, but Chief Executive Officer Daniel Wos said it recently faced its biggest challenge.

“When the government started offering rebates, a lot of dodgy operators opened up to make some quick money and once the rebates were gone, they were gone too.” Mr Wos said, adding that many customers came to him with faulty tanks from other companies, wanting help to fix splits or holes.

When they couldn’t be repaired, he would replace them with Polyworld products and ended up wth a yard full of scraps.

“I came up with this solution to recycle the plastic and make trolleys for different industries, such as hospitals for their linen and that kind of thing,” Mr Wos said.

And the industries benefited from his innovative idea.

“The trolleys they were using in the hospital were made of stainless steel so they were heavy, rattly and took 10 times the energy needed to make the plastic ones,” he said.

The plastic trolleys were also half the cost of the metal ones and Mr Wos is preparing to export them.

“The economy is tough at the moment but there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“We just had to diversify to get back on top.”

Beyond the Boom

Beyond the Water Tank Boom

Plastic Fantastic - Bruce Wedgwood of Polyworld

Beyond the Boom

Large plastic container manufacturer Polyworld wants to craft a future beyond the water tank boom. Sales Manager Bruce Wedgwood said Polyworld built and sold a range of high quality water containers, including water tanks, swimming pools and troughs.

Mr Wedgwood said activity at Polyworld exploded during the boom in demand for water tanks from early 2005 to early this year.

Mr Wedgwood said staff numbers grew at the height of the boom from 15 to more than 60.

But he said the high quality of Polyworld’s other products meant it was able to continue operating beyond the water tank bom.

“We build all our pools, tanks, troughs and other products at our site in Clontarf and they are sold at our retail site.” Mr Wedgwood said.

Tanks very much

A WATER tank is being used to create a vegetable garden at Morayfield’s Abbey Gardens – literally.

Clontarf business Polyworld has donated the tank so it can be cut in half and used to form a raised garden for the facility.

Abbey Gardens lifestyle co-ordinator Bronwyn Dawe said staff felt that a vegetable and herb garden would enable residents to continue their love of gardening, as well as improve their quality of life. The problem was to create a garden at a height suitable for wheelchairs.

Hearing of their dream, Polyworld arranged the donation. Polyworld’s general manager Gerard Rollo said he was delighted to assist staff to fulfil their dream.

The tank, which had an imperfection and was not suitable for sale, was worth $1330.
